Pappu Thotakoora/ Dal with Amaranth leaves






















Amaranth leaves ca
n be found in red colour too.



Ingredients:

Toor Dal/ kandi pappu - 1 cup
Thotakoora/ Amaranth leaves - big bunch (washed and leaves chopped)
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder - 1 tsp
Salt to taste


Seasoning:

Oil - 1 - 2 tbsp
Garlic flakes - 2 no. (smashed lightly)
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - a few sprigs

Proceed:

1) Boil Kandipappu/ toor dal with enough water until half cooked.

2) Add turmeric, chillipowder and salt to taste.

3) Add thotakoora, do not mix at this point, keep the lid. Cook until kandipappu/ toor dal is well cooked.

4) Do the seasoning and add it to above and switch off.

Serve with Rice, Ghee, Mango pickle, Aloo Fry and Yoghurt on side.

Do u know we can add more garlic to it, to infuse the dal with garlicky flavor. It's still taste yummy.

Any farmers market normally organized on sats and sundays would be good I guess. Onehunga market would be a good start.

Pappu Thotakoora was simply delicious.I enjoyed it very much.I love pappu always.I dont get Thotakoora in our place(Texas,USA).So have to try with frozen spinach...It was heaven!!!!!!!!really...

Hi Shweta,

You can find in Texas I think, it is also called amaranth leaves. I never twisted this with spinach, didi you added any tamarind to it?

I did not add Tamarind at all.....
I usually make spinach dal using tamarind juice.But last time I followed your blog recipe entirely.the result is delicious dal.Me and my husband love your recipes.

I have replaced Thotakoora leaves with Spinach leaves...Everything is same as in your blog.We buy certain fresh veggie,green leaves when we visit Meenakshi temple only.In day to day cooking,we get from nearby american store(walmart)
