Tomato Pappu / Dal

Set 1:

Toor Dal / kandipappu - 1 rice cup
Water - 2 & 1/2 rice cup
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder - 1 tsp
Salt - a pinch

Set 2:

Oil - 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 3/4 th tsp
Cumin seeds - 3/4 th tsp
Red chillies - 4 no (split in to half)
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Garlic - 3 no. (smashed and sliced)
Asafoetida or Hing - small pinch
MTR-Rasam powder - 3/4 th tsp (my twist)

Chopped Tomatoes - 3/4 th tin
Salt to taste.

Proceed:

1) Cook set 1 in pressure cooker until soft.

2) Take a kadhai, heat oil in it. add mustard seeds when it is stopped poping add cumin seeds when it is starting to brown, add curry leaves, red chillies, garlic and fry, add hing and rasam powder in the last, mix well. Immediately follow point 3.

3) Add chopped tomato and salt, cook until mushy.

4) Add cooked and mashed toor dal, mean while pour 1/2 cup of water in the cooked container of toor dal, scrape away any dal that left behind.

5) Add the dal water to point 4.

6) Cook it until starting to boil. Check for salt and serve.

Serve with Rice, Asparagus Silverbeet Fry or Aloo Fry or Okra Fry, Poppadums and Yoghurt on side.

Tip:

after tadka ( i have included 1 tsp urad dal too for seasoning), add 1/2 tsp rasam powder, and next step would be dal add little water in cooker bowl add that too.

do the same as above, but cook chopped tomato 1 tin in 1 tbsp butter seperately until mushy and add it to dal and mix well and bring to 1 boil.

this way tasted very nice. in Telugu we say kammaga vundi.

Hi Rajini,
The Dish came out very well. Just like the way my mom makes it at home. I did it twice till now and my girl friend says that I make the best Pappu. :) I used to make Pappu tomato with tamarind and without rasam powder. But this version is different. Thanks for the Recipe.

Please change the name to some thing like, new rasam 2010, I tried this recipie today- I am from Andhra, i can say that, it is no way near to original telugu tomoto pappu (dal). Dry rasam with Dal might be correct discription, In original telugu rasam has almost no dal in it.

Hi,

How many tomatoes does 1 tin of chopped ones equal?

Regards,
Pradeep

Rajani Rayudu said...

Hi Pradeep,

Sorry, I would measure and tell you I have no fresh tomatoes at home. If I do I will post. Roughly want to know then, tin is 400g so you need just the equivalent of it. Do this way for every cup of toor dal add double the qty of tomatoes 1 cup = 2 cups of chopped tomatoes. Hope I haven't confused you.

nice recipe, but is it not necessary to add half onion? bcos my mom does it is with onion, i wanted to try ur remix of tomato pappu...

Rajani Rayudu said...

Hi Sandhya,

Ya you can add it if is fresh soury tomatoes. If you add using tin then, it will remove the sourness from the dish.

Hello Rajinigaru...i wont like Rasam flavor in pappu...can i add sambar powder instead of rasam powder?

Rajani Rayudu said...

Hi Chikiliya,

Rasam powder gives nice taste to this dal, I won't recommend Sambhar powder instead skip both and do as said above or replace with pinch of fenugreek seeds while doing poppu.

In fact, the taste is still lingering on my tongue.Even though the recipe is simple, the taste is even suitable enough for royalty. This recipe is sure to be a keeper for life in my home.
